Premier Men Final – Wrap-Up                                                                 1st March 2009

After the deluge that hit Canterbury on Saturday afternoon, to have a game at all was something of a miracle, however a game they did have – 25 overs each starting at 3:30pm.

The lead-up to the match had been less than ideal, with the realisation that 5 of the team were out with CCA commitments.

This said, we were still able to field an experienced and extremely competitive side capable of doing the business on the day.

After losing the toss OBC were invited to have a bat and got through to 120/9. Unfortunately we were unable to string the one or two big partnerships together, losing wickets at key moments throughout the innings. There was some good cricket played, with a number of players getting starts (B. Rae 28, P. Wiseman 25, L van Beek 21, B. Walsh 24*) without being able to go on to that big score required.

As the team went out to field they knew that they had to field like demons and bowl with accuracy, control and composure – which they did. The ground fielding was one of the best displays for a while and the bowling forced high risks shots to be played. Unfortunately for OBC on this day the high risk stuff came off.

At the end of the day, while we walk away with the Silver Medal on this occasion, there is still a chance for redemption in the 2-day stuff where both teams are again fighting it out for the trophy.

Good luck for the rest of the season guys – still plenty to play for!!

PS

  • many thanks to those that turned up to support the team on the day – Life Members, Players etc.
  • HUGE thanks to Geoff and the team at Winnies for supplying the supporters with pizza on the day – kept many a smile on the face!!
  • Big-ups to Badger, De Vito, Hopps and Annabelle for assisting in organising the tents and fences, as well as looking after the clubroom facilities and bar!!!
